What is the ICU Recovery Clinic at UMMC?
A multi-disciplinary clinic developed in 2020 for patients who are survivors of critical illness. It is staffed by our pulmonary/ critical care doctors, critical care pharmacists, and acute care physical and occupational therapists. The primary goal of the clinic is to prevent and treat post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) and to maximize recovery in critical illness survivors.
What is PICS?
Post-intensive care syndrome is a term that describes the cognitive, psychological, physical and other impairments that affect ICU survivors and prevents them from living life as they were prior to their critical illness.

Who is eligible?
Patients with a previous ICU admission that was complicated by the need for mechanical ventilation, treatment with vasopressors, development of delirium, the need for rehabilitation after hospital discharge, and/or new respiratory problems requiring supplemental oxygen.
What to expect at initial clinic visit?
Upon arrival, you or your loved one will be asked to complete the WHODAS 2.0 questionnaire. You will then have an evaluation by a critical care pharmacist who will complete a medication reconciliation and make necessary medication adjustments. Following this, our physical and occupational therapists will perform an assessment to determine current and future therapy needs. Lastly an assessment by one of our pulmonary/critical care physicians will take place to address any ongoing physical, cognitive, or psychologic issues. From this clinic we will also be able to coordinate referrals to primary care and subspecialty services and assist with obtaining necessary medical equipment. We will follow you and monitor progress longitudinally.
